Mission

The primary purpose of Westwood Nursery School is to increase the social awareness and adaptability of each child by developing his/her self confidence and sense of worth as an individual.  To accomplish this, the school provides a dynamic learning experience based on a developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment.  Emphasis is placed on the whole child - the social, emotional, intellectual and physical.

About Westwood Nursery School

The Westwood Nursery School is a non-profit, non-sectarian cooperative nursery school for 3, 4 and 5 year old children with a long-standing reputation for excellence in staff and programming.  Since 1955, we have successfully incorporated active parent participation into our school day to enhance the children's learning environment.  This active parent participation is unique among Westwood nursery schools, and unusual in Boston's Metrowest.  Our highly qualified permanent staff is committed to a high excellence of teaching, and understands the benefits of parent participation.

Child Development

Small class size ensures all students get the attention they need.  Three year old students meet two or three times a week for four hours.  Four year old students have four hour classes four days a week.  And five year olds meet five days a week for four hours.  Westwood Nursery School provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum for each age level.  Children enjoy learning new social, academic and physical skills in this warm and enriched environment.

Parent Participation

The school is managed by a director and a steering committee of volunteer parents.  Each class is directed by a highly qualified, certified teacher (About) and assisted by a teacher's aid and a parent.  Parents participate on a rotating basis of approximately three times a year.  Each child's self esteem grows as independent life at school is shared with parents.  The child also gains in that he/she has an opportunity to interact with, and observe other parents as friendly helpful adults while establishing comfortable secure relationships with the parents of new friends and classmates.  Parents also grow in our environment through seeing other styles of interacting with children, and through seeing their child in the classroom setting.  Parents are always welcome to volunteer for additional times in the classroom.
